Poppy

Poppy

There are about 70 kinds which naturally grow in steppes, in mountains and deserts in east Asia, in the west of the North America, in the central and southern Europe, in Australia and even in subarctic regions.

The Latin name of a plant occurs from a word papa (father) and is connected with tradition of ancient Romans to give seeds of a poppy to children for calm. Poppies and now are widely used in pharmacology for manufacture of opium and its derivatives, and in the food-processing industry where seeds are added in a batch, and of brightly painted petals do natural food dye.
